Nico Live "How To..." for English viewers

Hi to all niconico vieweres outside of Japan.

I've been doing something called Niconico Namahoso, which is Niconico's live streaminig fairly new feature of Nico video.

Since I've gotten a comment regarding Nico Live, I tried to search for translated sites first, but couldn't find any... so, I've decided to write about it myself.

I will try to explain how to watch Nico live with translations and pictures.

05/03/10: Another article about Nico Live Seating Number & identifying IDs.

If you are interested, please click on "continue>>"

Here's a link to a official guide to Nico Live for those of you who can read Japanese.

First of all, there are generally two types of Nico Live; 1) Official Nico Live and 2) User/member Nico Live. You will find #1 mostly on the TOP page shown below. Anything with color hilights is usually one of them.  Mainly, I will be showing #2, though general flow is pretty much the same.

Nico Live Top 01Here's the TOP page for Nico Live.
I will break down the main parts. You can try exploring other stuff too :)  A button, which is not shown here on the very bottom right corner, is to start broadcasting just so you know. Also, only premier members can broadcast with it.

Nico Live Top 04This line shows categories just like when you watch videos. From the left they are, "Top" "Live Time Table" "General" "Yattemita (singing, playing inst., drawing, DJs etc.)" "Games" "Introducing uploaded videos" "Web Cam (showing a face of the broadcaster)" "Skype me (I think...)" "On‐the‐Spot Broadcasting (viewing Japanese shows and leaving comments on it, but must be living and owning a TV in Japan...)"

Right underneath is a current live broadcast table. You can click on the category or the time table to see what's on. You can start watching any one of them by clicking on a Thumnail or the title.

Nico Live Top 02If you see this, these are the general entrances. You must click on one of them to start watching. A white door is for general users and the gold is for premier users. I'm guessing that most of you will be using the left one.

Let's move on to a community's page. If you want to see a particular user's Nico live, you can go to the community's top page.

Com top 00If for mine, you will see something like this. This is when nothing is going on.

Com top 01When there's a Nico live going on, a new headder will appear above this.

Com top 02Just like this one. I've translated a few lines directly on the pix. You can click on a title or a red button, "Start Watching," on the bottom right.

Nico live pageOnce you click on it, you will see a page like this sample. Very similar to when you watch Nico video. Comments on the right side. There's a box to type in underneath the screen.
Nico live page 02Numbers on the bottom right are a sum total of viewers and comments.

This is the general flow as far as I know.

Nico Live Top 03Now, there's something called Time-shift reservation viewing too.

Time shift sectionYou will find this on the right side of the top page. I've translated most of them here too. The orange button is pretty much the same as starting a broadcast.
If the broadcaster reserves a time to do a Nico live, it will appear like this as you can see in the pix. By clicking on the Time-shift button, you will get chances to watch the live broadcast again afterwards within a week (After an hour from the start of broadcasting, you will be able to watch it). Note that you won't be able to comment on it.

When the Nico Live is not reserved, you can go to "the most recent live" and look for the yellow button and click on it to watch it. It will disappear after a week (3/19/10 I've sort of checked how it works with the regular member's status and turned out that there's no difference between premier and regular members of how many times you can watch and whether or not the Live must be reserved ahead to use Time-shift = Many times & don't have to be reserved. 3/21/10 I'm so sorry! I've re-checked it and found out that non-premier members must reserve ahead to be able to watch the Time-shifted broadcast...:( ).

I think I covered the main parts... I'm no expert, but there are ways of leaving different comments that are probably easier to just watch and learn what they mean. At least I know "@3" means "3 min. left."

3/21/10: Here's a good tool you can use. Download Nico Alert. It alerts you when someone in the Niconi-Community that you belong to starts Nico Live. On the bottom of the page you see, there's a button, "agree and install." Click to install it. The application will pop up. From the left, they are "Open," "Save," and "Cancel." Preceed to however you usually do to intall programs. From here, just follow the pictures. Should be easy enough so good luck:)

Alert 01This will show after you click on "Open" or "Save."
Alert 02
Alert 03Another agreement.
Alert 04You will see the white box once you finish installation.

If you have any questions, just leave me a comment here. I will try my best to answer them or translate it for you. If you know the answer to it, you are welcom to leave a comment as well :)

I was wondering, during the broadcasts, what are the numbers that are shown under 座席表 for?

Does the person hosting the broadcast tell who is who from those numbers?
2010/05/02 1:21 AM, from Fuyumi
Hi.

To simply answer your question, the host cannot know your 座席表 (the seating number) unless you tell the host.

Eventhough you tell the host the seating number, there's no way to know who you are just by that.

I made another pictures with the translation about NG user IDs and the seating #s. NG IDs are the key to tell who you are and what not ;)

Hello there~

Thank you so much for all these tutorials, they're are really REALLY helpful. I've got one question though - do you know if it's posibble to buy premium account using a foreign credit card? Does it even make a difference? I have no idea...

Oh, and I just joined your NND community! Is it okay to write in english on your live broadcasts?
2010/07/08 3:35 AM, from Crofe
*Crofe
Hi.
You are very welcome;)

About the Premium, according to the site directory, it is only good with Japanese credit cards or something called "Web Money," which you can purchase with Yen or Japanese CC. I've tried myself to purchase with US CC but couldn't. Right now I'm in Japan so I don't have that problem...

However, I've seen people who are from outside of Japan with Premium acccount, but I don't know how they got it.

Being the Premium allows you to have smoother viewing/better video quality during the busiest time (usually pm in Japan). But usually with time differences, I think you won't notice much. Also, you will be able to create your own NN Community and do a broadcast, you have extra color choice when you comment, and also the limits to videos you can add to mylist becomes infinite. If you upload videos, you upload larger data.

I'd say if you are just browsing, you don't really have to become the Premium user.

I hope this answered your questions. Feel free to ask me if there are further questions.

Oh, and thanks for joining *spiLa* community and please don't hesitate to comment in English;)

i don't seem to figure outhow to broadcast a live show
i've been to japan expo in paris this year and there was a nikoniko douga section with a camera and it was going live and so i said a few words of my own ^^;
anyway, since then i've been trying to figure out how to do it, i've got an account
but i don't get anything ^^;

this post of yours was helpful, i learned some things but i still don't know how to do a live (is it just for premium members? :/)

p.s. i also can't open that white door xDDD

please answer this ^^
2010/08/06 3:48 AM, from jana^^
*jana
Hi jana:)
Oooh, I heard about that< J-expo in Paris.

The comment reply above yours sorta explain, but to give you the answer, unfortunately, you need to...

1)Become premium + make your own community or
2)Become premium + join a community and also receive "a rights to broadcast in the community" from the owner of the community you joined.
(Quoted and translated from ttp://help.nicovideo.jp/community/2009/07/post_31.html)

This is the only way to do a broadcast so you must somehow get the premium status first...:(

The door won't open if the hasn't come or the time shift viewing time ended ^^;
2010/08/06 10:05 PM, from *spiLa*
Hello, just wondering...

If a live broadcast requires an online ticket, and I 'time shift' it, am I still charged?

Thanks for making this guide! It is so useful~ <3
2010/08/17 6:37 PM, from Shazza
*Shazza
Hi:) You are welcome.
I'm not too sure what you mean by "an online ticket" but let me try to answer your question.

To be clearer, you are charged
1) monthly (about $5) when you become a premium user and
2)each time whenever you reserve the slot as a streamer (amount varies depending on how many slots you reserve etc.).

You don't get charged for viewing time-shifted nico live.
However, you can view time shifts whenever you want for a week if you are the premium user, thus the monthly fee, but that's about it;)

I haven't been reserving the nico live so the time shifts are there but non-premium members aren't able to view them...
They can view it if I reserve the live ahead and have them click on the time shift button.

I hope this made sense for you! Let me know if you are not sure about anything else.
2010/08/17 11:07 PM, from *spiLa*
Hello *spiLa*-san,

Thank you very much for the speedy reply! ^^

I found out that a non-premium member can time-shift an event once? (not sure if it's per month or...) I successfully time shifted a live before~ w but it worked once only... ;A;

What I'm trying to ask is whether a live that requires a 'ネットチケット', will be OK to time shifted without fee. ^^;

Sorry for taking up your time,
Thank you! =v=;;
2010/08/18 5:00 PM, from Shazza
*Shazza
Hi:) You are very welcome.

Yes, non-premium user CAN watch time-shift once if you click on the time-shift button before the streaming starts. And you can click on the button only if the host reserves the slot ahead and make time-shift available.

I don't know about any streaming that requires 'net ticket' so I'm not sure how to answer your question... I'm sorry. I will try to ask the viewers at the next Nico Live :) They might know something about it.

Hello *spiLa*-san,

Ah, thank you! :)

Hi, spiLa-san, when will Kayo Police have a show on NICO NICO LIVE???
2010/09/04 5:01 PM, from Gazer
*Gazer

Hi.
I looked up who that is and found her blog but couldn't find any info about her Nico Live... Sorry:(

It seems that the Nico Nico did some upgrade of Nico Live section...

For now, the blue box and the blue header section right under the tabs are what's new and planned to be streamed so maybe if you recognize the people, you can check that out?

Additionally, the yellow one right under that is the past official Nico Lives that you can watch with the "Time-Shift" viewing ;)

Please understand that it's impossible for me to know everyone/event on Nico Live streaming.

They do change things around quite frequently...

Anyway, I hope this was at least a bit of a help to you. The best way to know the schedule is probably to check your favorite artists' blogs or the official web pages. If it is your favorite user Nico Live, should join their Nico community :)
2010/09/04 11:03 PM, from *spiLa*
Thanks for the advice, SpiLa-chan, but I don't know Kayo's Nico community and I don't know how to use Time Shift:))))))))
2010/09/09 6:31 PM, from Gazer
All right. Her show is on Thursday, the video game show. I watched it. Half Time-Shift, half live!!!!!!!!!!
2010/09/11 12:19 AM, from Gazer

Sorry my response was late...
I'm glad that you got to actually view the show:)
I just checked and the nico live top page has changed again...hmmm.

Seems like most of them that's listed are future schedules of the streaming now.

Hi!

I just have a quick question before my mum kicks me out. Do you have to have an internet access all the time in order for Nico Alert to work? 8D

It's a daft question, I know. :"D
2010/11/19 8:32 PM, from shannaroooooo
*shannaroooooo
Hi.
Is that from Naruto? lol

Anyway, I guess you do need an internet access in order to get the real time alerts.
Think this as your alarm clock without the batteries.

I'm pretty sure though, once you are re-connected, you will get the latest alerts.

I hope this helped ;)
2010/11/20 11:53 PM, from *spiLa*
Um..hello do you know if there's any way to download video from nico nico live? Because my favourite singer has always nico live about 10 PM (japan time) and in uk its like -9 hours...so Im in school at this time -A-; and i cant watch it D:
2011/03/02 3:42 AM, from reikuchuu
*reikuchuu
Hi there. I'm not sure if the viewer can do anything after the live...

As the broadcaster, I use this encoder from adobe that improves the sound quality and I can choose to record the live. I guess you can ask your favorite singer if s/he will upload the recorded live.

Sorry, that's all I can come up with right now:(
2011/03/07 7:57 PM, from *spiLa*
Hi! Thanks very much for this tutorial. Very useful. :) It's the only thing regarding Nico in english on the web ><

I am new to this whole Nico LIVE thing (I just "discovered" the site a day ago). Though your descriptions were super helpful, I have a hard time understanding what to do, exactly. Sorry if my questions are self-explanatory or n00b. D: I was gonna figure things out by myself til I decided to ask after I wasted 5 hours clicking on random things ><

So.. I'm trying to watch some live shows, but I don't know how to go about with this. So basically, any member can watch videos on the site except for "time-shift" shows, right? (Those are live (but not on-air) shows for premium and/or members who reserve?) And.. how do we exactly reserve to watch shows? >< Whenever I click on a live show to test if I can reserve it, I keep getting a pop-up msg "番組終了30分後以降、生放送時の状況を再現した状態で視聴できます。" Something about.. being able to watch the show 30 minutes after it's been finished? o_o

Also, how early on can we make a reserve? The time table only lists the schedule for 7 days. There is something I want to watch that is in about 20-or-so days. Is there no way I can reserve beforehand?
2011/04/09 10:37 PM, from joo
How do we exactly join a community? o_o
2011/04/22 11:46 PM, from Lixs
*Joo
Ahh!I am so sorry for not being able to check. I actually live in Japan and it's been well, you probably know from the news.

Anyhow, for the question "what to do with it," it's pretty much self-explanatory. Find your favorite genre or user, interact by commenting whatever etc. I mostly am the one hosting the live rather than watching so that's all I can think of so far.

You got the idea down about the "time-shift" right including the Japanese translation.

As far as I know(it's been awhile too...), you can reserve the one you can click on the yellow button:(
I hope you were able to watch the one you wanted!X(

Sorry if I wasn't much of a help.
2011/05/10 12:20 AM, from *spiLa*
Hi !
Thanks a lot for the tutorial ^^. Wow I can't believe I actually finally can watch Nico live xD !

Btw, I just signed up for premium. Foreigner can sign up using paypal account. I have Canadian paypal, and it works well ^_^

Hi. You are so welcome.

I did not know you can use the paypal account! I wish I'd known that earlier.
Perhaps it started later than when I returned to Japan. Haha.

Thank you for sharing the info ;) Enjoy Nico Live!
2011/05/25 11:39 PM, from *spiLa*
hi not sure if you still read these but I was looking for clarification. I'm interested in becoming a broadcaster but im not to sure of the costs, obviously I must become a premium member but after that do I have to pay for each broadcast? or is there an option for free broadcasts?
2011/06/26 8:38 PM, from mike
*mike
Hi.
Sorry, I do try to check here too.

So, yes you must first become a premium user which is 525yen per month.

It's free to create your community and broadcast.
FYI, the one segment is only 30 min. However, you can have it extend it by 30 min. /500pts(500yen). If you like, you can extend further by doing the above.

Most users including myself will just end the segment and tell the viewers whether or not you will start another broadcast before it ends.

I hope this helped!
2011/07/18 8:17 PM, from *spiLa*
Hi!! umm so I downloaded nico alert but i don't seem to get the alerts for the shows D: i have to manually check on the utattemita list ._. any advice?
2011/11/30 12:30 PM, from velvet
*velvet

Hi.Hmm... I do not use it usually but may I ask whether you joined those certain utattemita users' community or not?

If you are not in the community, you will not get an alert from the Nico-Nama.

If you find a singer you like, I suggest to join the community so the next time the singer starts the live, you will get the alert:)

Please let me know if that was not the case for you.

This is very useful. Thank you!

hi im not sure if you still check this post but i have a question!

i read somewhere that general users get only 10 timeshifts and premium users get 30 timeshifts. But is this amount of timeshifts monthly/yearly?? I cant seem to find any information regarding this... So for example if i used up 10 timeshifts already as a general user, i wouldn't get any more chances to timeshift? Or will it be replenished and if so when? Or if it's not replenished, is there anyway to get more timeshifts?

Sorry for the confusing question i hope its understandable. ><
2012/04/14 11:40 PM, from shadow
*shadow

Hi there.

I searched for 10 times or 30 times but I couldn't find about them as well...

From what I found out,

1) The general users can veiw the general users's live in timeshifts if you press the button ahead of the show. You can view as many time as possible for 7 days.

2) The general users can veiw the general users's live in timeshifts one time each show within the period of a week from the show date.

sorry for my bad english...

I saw some foreign people also who were online on nico nico (for example venus angelic(?)

Sorry I dont know if i posted this already, so I post it again>< I hope my question arrives..

Hi there, sorry for not noticing the comment...

Um, if I get this wrong feel free to correct me but you mean that if you wanted to broadcast at niconico, whether or not you needed to be premier?
-Yes, the user who'd like to broadcast must be a premier member.

To view it on the other hand, you do not need to be.

Currently, I don't know how those people outside of Japan got the premium :( Probably it's best if you ask them directly if you are still interested in becoming one.

Hope that answered you!

Good luck.
